Mermaid Movies and TV Shows

Did you know that there is more than one Mermaid related movie other than Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” here are just a few Mermaid related films and where you can find them.

Night Tide (1961) Even for a low budget film it is still a decent movie. You have to remember that this movie was made in the 60’s we did not have the technology then of what we do have now for making movies. You can find this movie online

Aquamarine (2006) This movie is definitely great for the kids.  You can find this movie at any Walmart or Target.

Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid (1948) You can find this on Netflix as I have seen this movie about a dozen times it is one of my personal favorites.

Lady In the Water (2006) Even though she does not support the fin anything related to the mermaid myth is still a siren/mermaid in my book. You can rent this at your local Blockbuster or even purchase at Walmart and Target.

inishThe Secret of Roan Inish (1994) Just a recap of the film According to The Score Card Review website, the movie is about “A little girl named Fiona is sent to live with her Grandparents on the Irish coast. There, she learns her family’s history, notably that she’s descended from a selkie, women who wear seal skins so they can swim in the water. She believes her long lost younger brother is being kept by the selkies on the Island of Roan Inish and that if she can move her family there, they will give him back.” (The Secret of Roan Inish) I have yet to see the film but I have read reviews that the movie is really good.

The Little Mermaid (1989) Who doesn’t love this movie. This is a must watch for kids of all ages and of course it is parental approved. Jodi Benson does an amazing job creating the voice of Ariel.

Splash (1984) Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah star in this movie along with John Candy and Eugene Levy. This is  literally a funny fish-out-of-water tale. You find this at your local Blockbuster or you can purchase online.

Miranda (1948) This is such a cute film there is a sequel to the film and both can be found on Netflix.

She Creature (2001) Written by an Anonymous person on IMDb the plot to this movie is “Two carnies (Sewell and Gugino) abduct a mermaid in Ireland, circa 1900, and decide to transport her to America. As their ship loses its way and heads towards the mythical Forbidden Islands, the mermaid begins to display its deadly side.” It says that this is part 1 So I am not sure if there is more to the series check out for more information. Not sure where to find the movie but I am sure you can find it online.

Mermaids2003.jpg  Mermaids (2003 TV Movie) I have seen this movie by parts on YouTube and to be quite honest this has such a great plot to the movie. This is another of my favorite films. If I am not mistaken Amazon has this on there streaming site. If not you can watch it on Youtube.

H2O: Just Add Water (2006 TV Series) This is a series that can now be found on Teen Nick. According to IMDb, (2013) “When three normal teenage girls stumble upon a ancient cave they undergo a transformation that will change their lives forever. H20 – Just Add Water, sees three very different girls facing everyday teen problems with an added twist – they’re mermaids with incredible powers over water. Written by Australian Television Information Archive”

The Thirteenth Year (1999) Poster The Thirteenth Year (1999, TV Movie) This is a Disney TV movie that was made back in the 90’s A teen learns that his birth mother is a mermaid after he begins to grow fins and slimy scales on his thirteenth birthday. (IMDb)

Image of Ocean Girl  Ocean Girl (1994 Tv Series) I am not quite sure what the plot line is for the series but you can find the series on Netflix.

Fishtales (2007) Poster Fish Tales (2007) According to IMDB, “The film takes place on the Greek Island of Spetses, where widowed Greek-History Professor Thomas Bradley is about to lose his research grant studying ancient love spells.” This can be found on Netflix.

$_12 Mermaids of Tiburon (1962) According to IMDb, “A diver is aided in his search for sunken treasure by beautiful mermaids.” I am in search of locating this movie my guess some where online.

Empires of the Deep (2014) Poster  Empires of the Deep (2014) As per the year this comes out, this is still in post-production according to the IMDb site. Which I know I am and will be patiently awaiting the arrival of this film to the theaters. The story line according to IMDb “For thousand of years, legends of beautiful mermaids have enchanted people from all over the globe. Their fascinating and mysterious world has always captured the imagination of humans. In film history, there hasn’t been a single movie that has uncovered and explored this mystical world. What secrets lurk beneath the depths? And why do beautiful mermaids seduce human men? “Mermaid Island” is the first underwater fantasy film to unveil and answer these questions. Written by subtitleman”

As we see there are numerous mermaid films and television shows. I would love to see a darker tale of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” like they have done with “Hansel & Gretel” and “Snow White and the Huntsmen” I have found a website that share what movies will be coming to the big screen soon Disney adaptions that have gone dark. “The Little Mermaid” is on the list. You can check it out here

  1. Does anyone know the name of the (I believe it was animated) mermaid TV show from about 10-15 years ago. I thought it was called Oceana but maybe I was wrong. I just recall that there was just one single female mermaid as the main character who had this big underwater lair. It’s not much, I know, but I was like 4 at the time and I just remember it was one of my favourite shows as a kid.
